For most children, their birthday party is one of the most anticipated events of the year; however, throughout the homeless shelters of Long Island, there are many children and families who go without these special events. To help celebrate these special moments, Birthday Wishes of Long Island is dedicated to bringing birthday parties to homeless children.
Many of these children feel forgotten, and more than the presents and goody bags, they love that people are coming to spend time and share their birthday with them," said Jamie Rapfogel, Long Island Regional Coordinator of Birthday Wishes. "It's an honor to be able to work with these wonderful families and to be involved in celebrating moments of their lives that are special to them.

Jean Boen of Every Woman's House recently sent me a copy of the latest printing of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act of 1987. The Act has been in place for more than two decades to ensure homeless children have access to education. Today, this act is more important than ever because more than 1.35 million children experience homelessness each year.
In a nutshell, the McKinney-Vento Act gives homeless children the right to remain in the same school even if they move; to enroll in a new school without the typical records such as proof of residency, immunizations, school records, or other papers; get transportation to school; get all of the school services they need; and challenge decisions made by schools and districts.

SAN BERNARDINO - A handful of women and children who once were homeless will sleep better this week thanks to some divine intervention and the city's efforts.
Casa Merced III, a renovated 1,549 square-foot home on the city's west side, is the latest transitional home for women and children who graduate from Veronica's Home of Mercy. "The program is essential and more like them will be essential," said Kent Paxton, director of the Mayor's Office of Community Safety and Violence Prevention . Paxton, speaking Friday at a ceremony to mark the opening of the new house, said there are about 1,500 homeless people in the city.

LONG BEACH - Dora Jacildo watches as two small children skip through a brightly colored playroom planted in a dreary industrial section of West Long Beach.
Soon, the children's parents will arrive to cart them back to nearby homeless shelters, but for now, the playroom is a small slice of stability in an otherwise chaotic life.

The Homeless Children's Education Fund rolled out the red carpet on Monday for its annual Champions for Children soiree at the Rivers Club, where chair Bob Fragasso and honorary chairs Ralph and Ruth Anne Papa were among the 300 awaiting the arrival of a reportedly shorn Steeler Brett Keisel and his plus-one, Sarah, also the Champions for Children awardees.
She told me that the old me would have kicked the new me's butt," he laughed, pinstriped and perfectly groomed.

We had every intention of remaining in hibernation on Tuesday until we heard that the Homeless Children's Education Fund was hosting a social hour in honor of Steelers bearded bandit Brett Keisel and his roomie, Sarah, where it was every man for himself when it came to getting one of the guys to stand next to his royal facial hairness for the requisite photo op.
I don't want to be standing next to you unless I have a box to stand on!" laughed HCEF founder Joe Lagana.
