  • Today marks the end of Bruce Beardsley's eight-year tenure as chairman of the Lancaster County Democratic Party. Not since the days of the late John Pittenger has the party been as vibrant. Under Beardsley, party membership has grown by more than 40 percent and Democrats have become competitive in elections beyond the city. The party has done a better job of screening candidates and raising funds for elections. Party leaders found themselves in unison with The Lancaster Chamber of Commerce & Industry when it endorsed home rule. Beardsley has been to Harrisburg for budget addresses and to discuss issues with lawmakers.

  • Your Saturday, May 17, editorial about home rule is disconcerting. It raised questions about several parts of the proposed home-rule charter, which made us wonder whether the editorial writer actually had attended any of the Government Study Commission meetings. The voters elected an impressive group of people who epitomize service to the community and the electorate. Their dedication and responsibility to the public never wavered. Meetings were conducted not only to study our government and write a charter, but to include the citizens of Lancaster County in the process. Improving Lancaster's county government was the sole agenda.

  • TO THE INTELL EDITORS: I agree the positions of jury commissioner should be abolished. They would have been abolished three years ago if the home rule charter had passed. A home rule charter would also have made possible the further "housecleaning" you called for in the row offices.

  • I have been following the debate about the proposed home-rule charter and I was amused when I read that the Lancaster County Republican Committee is recommending a no vote. Isn't this the same group who, through its refined interview process, brought before the voters a majority of the previous board of commissioners that, through their actions, created, in some minds, a need for change?

  • Editorials While members of the Lancaster County Government Study Commission devise a "home-rule" charter aimed at streamlining county government, officials in Allegheny County and Pittsburgh are taking things a big step further - possible merger of the two governments.

  • Your editorial last Saturday, concerning the county home rule study report, should be an eye-opener for every thinking Lancaster countian. If the report is adopted as is by the voters in November, we will be subjected to a bureaucratic, technocratic jumble of theory. I urge every intelligent, responsible voter to examine carefully the provisions set forth by the Government Study Commission. Lancaster County government has a workable structure. Adding two more commissioners may be all that is needed. Selecting the right persons to be county officers has been the major problem. The solution to that problem is for political parties and voters to be more discriminating in picking nominees and voting.
