HOPEWELL -- Hopewell gardeners recently gathered together to transplant over 600 tomato seedlings that they had started from seed three weeks earlier so that they will be ready for planting in home gardens later in May. Sponsored by Hopewell's Ward 1 Neighborhood Network, this was the second in a series of horticulture events designed to promote home gardening in Hopewell. While working non-stop on the seedlings, participants exchanged gardening tips and techniques. Caroline White demonstrated a squeeze watering bottle she made from a recycled plastic soft drink bottle by making small slits in the cap.

With snow piled high and the storms of March and April still ahead, the University of Maine Cooperative Extension could not have picked a better winter to offer gardening workshops across the state. Starting with a new bed, a 14- 14-14 fertilizer may be tilled into the soil during the preparation stage along with soil amendments - sphagnum peat moss, humus/manure and topsoil if necessary. After flowers are planted, scattered a light layer of fertilizer and weed preventive on top of the soil.
Every church should have a garden. Why this odd little prescription? Because churches are sites of "religious" training. The word "religion" means "to bind back." Anything religious is meant to bind humans back to the source of life: God. Gardening best drives this point home: gardening teaches that we are needy, life is mysterious, and the unexpected happens. These three lessons teach us much about faith.
