WHEN SHIRLEY DOBIHAL OF HAMDEN came home to her condo after recovering from a broken hip last summer, she and her husband needed to make some changes.
So her husband, Ed, called a retired man he'd known from the hardware store, who was happy to come over and install a rail on the stairs. Someone else helped them put a hospital bed in their living room. They knew who to call to get groceries delivered, and which pharmacies would bring medicines over.

The story goes that the rabble-rouser was having breakfast with her husband one morning soon after arriving at the Jewish Home for the Aging when the wiseguy sitting at the next table came over and introduced himself.

Florence Martin, originally from Paris and now residing in Baltimore, was looking for a recipe for making a traditional American Jewish style beef brisket. Delores Keene from Baltimore sent in her favorite brisket recipe, which comes from "Mama Cooks California Style, New Twists on Jewish Classics," a 1997 cookbook put out by the Jewish Home for the Aging of Los Angeles.
I liked the way this recipe sounded so I decided to test it out on my family for Rosh Hashanah dinner this year. It received rave reviews. The key to this recipe, as with most traditional brisket recipes, is advance planning.
