What the Naugatuck Valley needs is more bats. It will get them if the state Department of Transportation heeds the suggestion of Donna Lindgren, director of the Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center. At a recent hearing held by the state Department of Transportation on the rehabilitation of the Route 34 bridge over the Naugatuck River in Derby, Lindgren suggested the work include features that would make it attractive for bats to roost.

The Ferndale Garden Club will host its annual Christmas decorating show "Christmas in a Winter Wonderland" on Nov. 16 at Michael's Eighth Ave., 7220 Greyburn Drive. The doors will open at 6:30 p.m. This year's show will expand on last year's revamped format. The hall will be set up with an area to depict a front entrance, living room and dining room area in a house. Curator sought for state-owned home in Baltimore County The Maryland Department of Natural Resources will hold an open house on July 23 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the historic Barrans House in Baltimore County. The home was built around 1930 as a prefabricated kit house from Sears Roebuck & Co., and contains original design features including woodwork, molding and fixtures.
