At a recent hearing held by the state Department of Transportation on the rehabilitation of the Route 34 bridge over the Naugatuck River in Derby, Lindgren suggested the work include features that would make it attractive for bats to roost.

The Ferndale Garden Club will host its annual Christmas decorating show "Christmas in a Winter Wonderland" on Nov. 16 at Michael's Eighth Ave., 7220 Greyburn Drive. The doors will open at 6:30 p.m.
This year's show will expand on last year's revamped format. The hall will be set up with an area to depict a front entrance, living room and dining room area in a house. The florists will design different pieces to decorate the entrance and home, such as the mailbox fence, front door, window, mantle, side tables, dining room table and more.

Curator sought for state-owned home in Baltimore County
The Maryland Department of Natural Resources will hold an open house on July 23 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the historic Barrans House in Baltimore County. The home was built around 1930 as a prefabricated kit house from Sears Roebuck & Co., and contains original design features including woodwork, molding and fixtures. The house sits on two acres at 1527 Providence Road near Towson, adjacent to Cromwell Valley Park. It is available for restoration under the department's resident-curatorship program, through which private donations are sought for the restoration and maintenance of state-owned historic buildings. This article describes differences among various philosophies of nursing home design and administration such as the human habitat model, which transforms traditional nursing homes into "homes." Also, an experiential learning experience is described in which university seniors applied the human habitat model to a nursing home design project. After conducting research and participating in a workshop to learn about the model, students developed a greater concern for and understanding of the needs of nursing home residents as well as ways to create better living environments for them.
