PASSAIC -- Twelve priests dressed in ornate robes in an array of color -- crimson, gold, white -- filed onto the altar before the congregation at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, where each placed a bare foot above a silver basin. The spiritual leader, stripped of his red robe and wearing a white gown, individually washed, wiped and then kissed each priest's foot. The spiritual leader, Archbishop Stefan Soroka, took the role of Jesus in the annual Holy Thursday ritual of the washing of the feet.

WASHINGTON - Dying on Holy Thursday - the day marking the creation of the priesthood - on the floor of his parish's sanctuary, under the eyes of a statue of the patron saint of happy deaths, the Rev. G. William Finch left his Rockville, Md., congregation with powerful Easter symbolism. Even as St. Raphael Catholic Church, one of the region's few Roman Catholic megachurches, mourned its pastor, members said Saturday that the imagery was striking. Not only did Finch die just after he finished saying Mass, surrounded by parishioners praying the rosary and priests anointing him, next to the statue of Saint Joseph, but it happened just before Easter, a time when Christians focus intensely on mortality.

The Jewish High Holy Days are observed during a 10-day period between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Rosh Hashanah is celebrated on the first day of Tishrei on the Jewish calendar, and Yom Kippur on the 10th day of Tishrei, the seventh month of the Jewish calendar. This year, the celebrations are from Thursday through Sept. 22, followed by the celebration of Sukkot, which begins on Sept. 27. Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, is a time of family gatherings, special meals and sweet-tasting foods.

VATICAN CITY - Pope Benedict XVI sent ceremonial oils blessed on Holy Thursday to Italy's devastated quake zone in a sign of solidarity with the survivors. Benedict led a ceremony in St. Peter's Basilica that included the traditional blessing of holy oils, with some to be sent to the mountainous Abruzzo region. Benedict plans to tour the area of Italy's worst quake in three decades after the Easter holiday.
