Retired workers from Century Aluminum, who are losing their company health benefits, will hold a candlelight vigil in the company's parking lot in Ravenswood today at 7:30 p.m. Century closed its aluminum smelting plant in Ravenswood on Feb. 10, 2009, laying off 651 workers. The plant remains closed.
A federal judge put on hold a civil fraud lawsuit against the owners of National Prearranged Services Inc. to allow a criminal case against them to go to trial first. Senior U.S. District Judge E. Richard Webber, of the U.S. District Court in St. Louis, said in an order last week that fairness demands staying all discovery to be given under oath.

Frustrated firefighters took to Charleston's streets on Monday to protest the decisions of city leaders to make a number of cuts to their department. About 30 firefighters lined Virginia Street E. in front of City Hall waving signs with slogans like, "Overpaid politicians placing a $ on your family," and, "Staffing cuts endanger firefighters and citizens alike.
