SYDNEY, Australia -- Defending champion Wild Oats XI led the fleet out of Sydney Harbour and dueled with Skandia on Saturday in the Sydney to Hobart yacht race. Wild Oats is trying to win Sydney- Hobart line honors for the fourth year in a row. At one stage it trailed Skandia, first across the finish line in 2003, by just more than 2 miles. But Wild Oats made up the ground and the two traded the lead several times late Friday, often separated by only several hundred yards.
Early Saturday, the two yachts were virtually side by side but off record pace. Skippered by Mark Richards, Wild Oats holds the record in the 723-mile race of 1 day, 18 hours, 40 minutes, 10 seconds from 2005.
