  • Hispanic Heritage Month, which begins this week, actually started as a single week in the 1960s under the Johnson administration; it was expanded in 1988 to cover the 30 days between Sept. 15 and Oct. 15. The dates cover independence anniversaries for Mexico, Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, as well as Columbus Day, which many countries celebrate as the beginning of Latin presence and establishment of Latin American culture in the New World.

  • Bernie Martinez, a businessman and volunteer who spent decades introducing the Pikes Peak region to Hispanic art and culture, died of heart failure Wednesday night after a long illness, his wife said. He was 77. Among many efforts to promote art that celebrates Hispanic culture, Martinez helped start the Hispanic Arts Contest in Colorado Springs School District 11 about a dozen years ago, said D-11 grants manager Chris Martinez. The contest attracted 450 student entries last year in its regular run during Hispanic Heritage Month, Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. Despite deteriorating health and being confined to a wheelchair, Martinez attended an exhibition of the students' artwork last October.
