Held is surely correct in emphasizing that the issues to which her book is devoted are not merely philosophical but rich in implications for life, for clinical practice, for the epistemic dispositions we bring to bear on the facts of experience. At the end of the day, the constant background of lived life is chiefly in the form of meanings, and it is thus vital that we have a grasp of what Hilary Putnam had in mind in giving his essay the title, "The meaning of 'meaning.'" Putnam concluded in that influential work that meaning "ain't in the head," on the basis of the potable fluids found on Earth and on Twin Earth.

The Teays Valley Newcomers/Neighbors Club will have its annual auction on Wednesday, Nov. 9, at Mount Vernon Baptist Church, 2150 Mount Vernon Road in Hurricane.
