Yorkshire Bank, which is part of the NAB Group, has become the first UK high street bank to be awarded the Carbon Trust Standard for its efforts in tackling climate change. The bank was given the prestigious accolade after reducing its carbon footprint by 15.8% over a period of 12 months. Unlike other award schemes, organizations are rewarded for actions they've taken to cut carbon across their own operations. The Carbon Trust Standard was launched in June 2008 with the support of Environment Secretary Hilary Benn and Dragon's Den entrepreneur Deborah Meaden.

ABUJA, Nigeria - A proposal drafted by the United States and Britain to help end the war in Sudan's Darfur region meets key rebel demands and could set the stage for a peace accord, a rebel negotiator said Thursday.
The rebel statements came as top U.S. and British envoys faced a Thursday midnight deadline to persuade Darfur's warring parties to sign a peace pact and resolve the crisis that has claimed at least 180,000 lives and forced more than 2 million people to flee their homes in the vast western Sudanese region.
