While most of the new developments in information search, retrieval, and access may seem to be coming from relatively new players in the information industry, the traditional suppliers of information are not standing still. Likewise, librarians are developing new environments and services that are designed to serve 21st-century patrons. An international alliance was formed to govern a global online science gateway named WorldWideScience.org. A single search query provides access to more than 200 million pages of science and technology information that is not typically available through a popular search engine. The BestCollegesOnline.com site revealed its list of the 25 most modern libraries in the world. The list is not ranked, but each entry includes an explanation as to why it was cho...

Higher education plays a significant role in shaping the culture of societies. As globalization becomes more prominent in all aspects of civilization, higher education must respond and lead in this endeavor. It is incumbent upon postsecondary institutions to train the leaders of tomorrow to lead in a world without boundaries, and to be able to embrace and promote the diversity of this new world stage. As such, higher education administration graduate programs must rise to the challenge of training educators in a new "global" way to prepare them for the possibilities that will emerge.

A joint use library provides an example of a strategic alliance between two or more stakeholders. The planning and implementation of such a venture can be a complex undertaking. This article draws on the example of the proposed joint use library and history center in Worcester in the UK, which promises to be the largest such undertaking in the UK. Some of the potential challenges that other joint use university and public libraries have faced are explored. The article argues that lessons can be learned from other sectors where the factors contributing to successful strategic alliances are well researched and documented.
