DALLAS, Aug. 13 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The UT System Board of Regents gave its approval on Aug. 12 to plans for a new state-of- the-art University Hospital at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. The project now will go to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for its review and final approval.

Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board Commissioner [Raymund Paredes] said he and his team will be launching a campaign in San Antonio called Generation Texas, a campaign that promotes career-readiness and college-bound culture. "The goal is that the young people represented in this room are going to be the greatest generation this state has ever produced," said Paredes. "They're going to carry forward all the great values that have made this state great and they're going to achieve even more.
The Governor challenged Brackenridge students: "I dare you to go to college," he said, "to make that difference, to get that respect that you deserve. You'll not only understand that it will improve your lives, you'll rise up all the people around you into a better future."

Since [Cigarroa]'s appointment, the number of Hispanic graduates has increased from 170 in the fall of 2000 to 290 this current semester. The university has also experienced immense growth in its research enterprise while under Cigarroa's leadership.
In September 2002, Cigarroa inaugurated the Presidential Distinguished Lecturer Series, which continues to bring top scientists and medical professionals to the campus annually, and in January 2003 the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board approved UTHSCSA's and UT San Antonio's request to establish a joint PhD program in biomedical engineering.

Previously, [Lula Westrup Pelayo] served as the dean of professional and technical education at San Antonio College, where she was responsible for the oversight of eleven technical program areas. Under her direction, the department applied for and received grants totaling more than $1.4 million. During her tenure at San Antonio College, she served as a faculty member and continuing nursing education specialist, and was elected for three 3-year terms as chairperson of the department of nursing education. Under Pelayo's leadership, the department of nursing education continued its accreditation, with special commendations by the Board of Nursing for the State of Texas and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, which awarded the program "Exemplary" status.
