What do a wicked witch, a genie and a talking cat all have in common? You can see them all and more at Redlands High School's ninth annual Children's Theatre Festival and Carnival Saturday, Dec. 10. Three student-directed plays and a clown show will be presented twice each throughout the day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Clock Auditorium on the RHS campus.
James River to perform at regional festival Nov. 20 James River's Knightly Players will perform Alan Haehnel's short comedy "Caution: Politricks" at the Region C Theatre Festival on Saturday, Nov. 20, at Radford High School. A bare stage is the setting for a crazy disagreement that grows between Joe (played by Sean Aaron) and Sarah (played by Katie Smith). What starts out as a mild difference of opinion develops quickly into a major issue where lives are at stake -- or so Joe says! Others are swept into the argument for various and different reasons until even the media shows up to cover the event. Everything comes to a sudden halt when something totally unexpected happens! Flags part of play that addressed racial hatred As the executive director of the Illinois High School Theatre Festival I am disappointed that D.L Hosea would write a letter without knowing the context of the concern ("Confederate flags at event send poor message at ISU," YourViews, Jan. 15).
Redlands High School Theatre Arts Company presents its 12th annual Children's Theatre Festival beginning 10 a.m. Saturday in Clock Auditorium on the RHS campus. The students will present three one-act plays - "Robin Hood" at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., "Jungle Book" at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. and "Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz" at noon and 3 p.m.
Students at Nansemond River High School had a chance to learn about the effects of drunken or distracted driving thanks to the creativity of physical education teacher Sarah Smith and Andre Weaver, the school's resource officer from the Suffolk Police Department. Students were accompanied by sponsoring adults on a golf cart obstacle course. The students first made a pass on a course to familiarize themselves with golf cart operation. Next, the student was handed a calculator and told to drive the course while performing multiple mathematical calculations on the fly. The golf cart speeds slowed remarkably. Nativity BVM School gym was full of laughter and music for the visit of Santa Claus, Sunday, Nov. 29. This party was sponsored by the CYO and the Civics Club of NBVM. There were ornaments to put glitter and sparkles on. There were cookies to decorate and there was even a place you could write your letter to Santa. Santa was there to talk to and his elf passed out candy canes. Holiday music was provided by Jerry Stangl, Mary Donar and Ellen Berning. Hot dogs and walking tacos were available along with hot chocolate and home- made treats for dessert. The Galena High School Drama Department was selected to perform their latest production of "The Importance of Being Earnest" at this year's Illinois High School Theatre Festival. The Bowdoin International Music Festival is in full swing. The festival will present the first of six Festival Fridays concerts this Friday at Crooker Theatre in Brunswick High School.
