DALLASTOWN, Pa., July 22 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- It's the middle of summer, but high school Language Arts teachers across the US are planning fall curriculum now. On the first day of class, they will most likely confront three months worth of time their students spent addicted to "constricted writing environments" such as Facebook, Twitter, and mobile texting - mediums that confine the expression of ideas to a limited character count. By nature, this can lead to students throwing out proper grammar, sentence structure, and other traditional language skills needed for English class and the college application process. To address this trend, teachers are looking for innovative ideas to encourage their students to write more (not less) during the coming school year.
To help in this missi...

This paper addresses the recent adoption of economics standards in the state of Indiana. The analysis is based on responses to a survey instrument that was designed to obtain information about the demographic profile of high school economics teachers, their coverage of topic areas included in the economics standards, and the critical challenges they face as high school economics teachers. We find that while virtually all teachers in our sample deviate from the standards, the magnitude of the deviation is small, and occurs in a predictable way. As a result, the...

Los Angeles Unified schools chief Ramon Cortines said Wednesday he was taking over Fremont High School and that he would make all existing teachers and administrators at the chronically underperforming campus reapply for their jobs.
The first-of-its-kind move at LAUSD is similar to actions taken in New York and Chicago that have been applauded by federal education officials eager to reform languishing urban school districts. In many cases, the entire staff of a failing school - from principal to custodian - is replaced as a way to improve academic achievement.
