COLTON - They began as rivals, sharing only similar histories of broken families and a search for camaraderie in the JROTC programs of opposing high schools. High school seniors whose parents or guardians are consumer- members of Prince George Electric Cooperative, and whose primary residence is served by the cooperative, are eligible to apply now for the 2012 educational scholarship to be awarded by the Virginia, Maryland & Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives' (VMDAEC) Educational Scholarship Foundation Board. Scholarship recipients are selected based on a combination of the following weighted criteria: financial need at 40 percent; academic achievement at 40 percent; and personal statement at 20 percent. Applicants must be entering a post-high-school educational institution as a freshman in the fall of 2012. The scholarship must be used to pay for tuition, fees and books.
More than 11 percent of Mississippi's high school seniors are in danger of not being able to graduate this year because they haven't passed required state tests, but local school officials say their percentage of at-risk students is lower. Of almost 28,000 12th-graders in the state, 3,295 still must pass one or more tests to graduate.

As part of a "character-building" field trip for his senior homeroom class, Centennial High teacher Regis Inge and his students volunteered ait the Los Angeles Mission, 303 E, Fifth St. in what is widely known as "Skid Row," During the half-day visit, students were split off to perform different tasks in preparation for the non-profit homeless shelter's "Christmas Street Meal," which was held outdoors on Wednesday, December 24, along Fifth Street and Wall Street in downtown Los Angeles. Inge's students sorted canned food at L.A. Mission's warehouse, gathered utensils for the holiday dinner and prepared "thank-you" cards for the non-profit's supporters. Drawing on a national probability sample of high school seniors (n = 2,560), this research explores relationships between exposure to four types of mass communication-magazines, movies, newspapers, and television-and attitudes toward anabolic steroids, operationalized along three dependent measures. Logistic regression analyses revealed statistically significant relationships among (a) magazine exposure and estimates of drug use in professional sports, (b) newspaper and television exposure and disapproval of steroid use, (c) newspaper exposure and estimates of self-inflicted harm caused by steroid use, and (d) exposure to anti-drug spots and each of the three dependent variables. Theoretical and methodological implications and suggestions for future research are discussed.
