Five schools from the West Allis-West Milwaukee School District are among 149 high-poverty schools across the state being recognized for achieving better-than-average scores on the state's standardized tests, education officials announced Tuesday. The district's schools named as New Wisconsin Promise Schools of Recognition are Jefferson, Lincoln, Longfellow and Pershing elementary schools, and West Allis Middle School.

• San Bernardino District Schools Make Effort to Improve

SAN BERNARDINO - Two weeks ago in the neighborhood of Lytle Creek Elementary School, an 18-year-old was shot to death 150 yards from the school. High crime along with soul-deadening poverty are facts of life for children who live in the area. • Leap Gets $10g From Mcdonald House

NEW HAVEN -- Ronald McDonald House Charities of Connecticut and Western Massachusetts recently awarded $10,000 to Leadership Education and Athletics in Partnership Inc. for the LEAP Computer Learning Center renovation, the company said. The grant was part of a total of $88,500 given to seven organizations.
