• Update: Bear Canyon Fire 100 Percent Contained

Firefighters managed to fully contain a fire Tuesday that burned four acres near High Drive west of Colorado Springs, according to U.S. Forest Service officials. A lightning strike started the Bear Creek Canyon fire during a storm that ran through the area Sunday night, officials said. Several runs from fire fighting planes helped bring the blaze under control quickly Monday.

• Update: Bear Creek Canyon Fire Contained, High Drive Still Closed

A fire that burned approximately three acres in El Paso County has been fully contained but there are still some road closures in the area as firefighters work, according to U.S. Forest Service Officials. The road closure on High Drive west of Colorado Springs continues while firefighters work in the area. The closure on Lower Gold Camp road lifted on Tuesday, however members of the public are still asked by fire officials to avoid the fire area.

There is a short street southeast of the intersection of King and 19th that is named Pejn Street by the post office or Pejn Avenue by the city. Residents pronounce the name PEE-jin and say it must be an American Indian name. My Web search produces nothing. A November 2004 obituary in the Steamboat Springs Pilot mentions that the deceased (born in 1917) was raised in Black Forest, graduated from high school in Monument, and was a member of the "Pejn Indian Club" in Colorado Springs. • Graduating 'High School,' with 'Fame' in His Sights

Nick Lanzisera graduated from Pine Creek High School in Black Forest two years ago, but, fortunately for him, he keeps going back to school. First, Lanzisera, now a lanky 20-year-old, landed a spot as a dancer in the traveling tour for Disney Channel's mega-hit "High School Musical." The role came just two months after Lanzisera left Colorado Springs for Los Angeles. That led to a small part as a dancer in "High School Musical 2" and the ensuing stage show tour. And that led to a spot as a principal dancer in the third (and apparently final) installment in the trilogy, "High School Musical 3: Senior Year," which was released in theaters instead of on television and has raked in $88 million since it opened in October.

Timothy Charles Rogers, 53, passed away on September 5, 2004 in Santa Barbara, CA from pancreatic cancer. Tim was born August 26, 1951 in Haverhill, MA to Betty and Charles Rogers of Black Forest, CO. A graduate of Air Academy High (Colorado Springs, CO) and Adams State College (Alamosa, CO), he served in the US Army from 1975 to 1978, then made his home in Santa Barbara. Tim enjoyed playing softball and hockey and was an avid golfer. Tim is survived by his parents; brothers: Thomas (Theresa) of St. Louis, MO, and Peter of North Platte, NE; sister, Claire (Chris) Shoales of Eagle, CO; nieces: Liz (George) Winkler, Mary, and Catherine; nephews: Matt, John and Patrick; and several cousins, including Kathy Rice Kern of Colorado Springs.

Classic Cos. and Vantage Homes, two of Colorado Springs' best known homebuilders, have partnered with a Minnesota firm to buy Promontory Pointe, a small residential development in northern El Paso County that has languished because of its previous owners' financial troubles. Classic, Vantage and Mountain Real Estate Capital paid $4 million last week to a receivership that controlled the bulk of the 267 home sites in the 120-acre project north of Baptist Road and Gleneagle Drive, said Classic CEO Doug Stimple. Another $800,000 was paid to a separate partnership that controlled 19 sites, he said.

Spring, always welcome after a long winter, is the only time of year to catch the 100-foot-high waterfall flowing at Sycamore Canyon just outside Williams, Ariz., in the Kaibab Forest. This picturesque mountain town is the gateway to the Grand Canyon, with Route 66 as the main street. Nestled in the headstream of the Sycamore Canyon wilderness area, Sycamore Falls is one of northern Arizona's most beautiful and lesser-known treasures. The falls is created by the snowmelt from higher terrain that flows into the canyon and can be seen only in the spring, when they flow for approximately four to six weeks.
