Friendly's, once a familiar fixture in North Jersey neighborhoods, with its folksy, colonial-style red-brick facades, has become increasingly squeezed by competition from newer, flashier family restaurants and fast-casual chains, leading the 76-year-old company to file for bankruptcy protection on Tuesday. The chain, based in Wilbraham, Mass., immediately closed 63 restaurants, including one New Jersey location, as part of its restructuring plan. An additional 424 restaurants will remain open, including 31 in New Jersey. North Jersey Friendly's restaurants in Elmwood Park, Tenafly, Midland Park, Hillsdale, Passaic and the Pompton Plains section of Pequannock will remain open, the company said.
