The latest program to try to stabilize the ailing financial industry, announced Monday by Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, is still fundamentally wrong-headed. If the problem was years of overly loose credit offered to marginal borrowers, then the way you get out of it is by taking a rest from overheated and overleveraged credit until various commodities reach more realistic prices, and people and companies work their way out of debt, not by pumping more funny money into the credit system. What the heck are President Bush and Treasury Secretary Henry Paulsen doing getting involved in bailing people out of bad mortgages? That's not the proper role of government. Freezing rates so folks can stay in the home they can't afford only delays the day of reckoning and punishes the ones who loaned the money. Our country became great in spite of government intervention not because of it.

Imagine for a moment that Congress decides to create a brand-new federal office. Then at the same time, Congress decides it needs to conduct a study about whether it would be a good idea to vastly expand the scope of the new office that it just created. Last year when Congress created the Federal Insurance Office (FIO), it ordered a broad study of insurance regulation in the US -- but it assigned the task of conducting that study to the FIO that it had just created. The FIO is meant to serve as an information resource for policymakers and to coordinate international insurance agreements. The troubling provision that remained unchanged was the one requiring the newly minted FIO to conduct a study of insurance regulation and report to Congress with recommendations in 18 months.
