IDAHO FALLS -- The father of an eastern Idaho Boy Scout who was among at least 2 dozen boys molested in the mid-1990s by a camp counselor says even though he's moved away from Idaho, he'll return to the 2007 Legislature in Boise to lobby for new laws he hopes will help protect victims of child sexual abuse.
Paul Steed, whose son, Adam, was just 14 when he was molested by Bradley Stowell in 1997 at Camp Little Lemhi near Swan Valley, says he wants to eliminate the existing one-year statute of limitations on not reporting knowledge of a crime.

The Baltimore Child Abuse Center's newest staffer may soon be padding into a city courtroom, ready to help a child through one of the toughest experiences of her life.
The center has just acquired Kelly, a specially trained service dog, to comfort children as they talk about sexual abuse. For now, Kelly is working only in the waiting room of the center, visiting the kids before their forensic interviews, but executive director Adam Rosenberg hopes to bring him into actual interviews soon, and, eventually, into the courtroom with victims.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. Over the course of nine years, former ballboy Bobby Davis told his story of sexual abuse at the hands of Syracuse University assistant basketball coach Bernie Fine to the police, the college, the local newspaper and a national TV network. Each time, either he was too late or his story couldnt be proved. When he went public again last month, he was maligned by Hall of Fame coach Jim Boeheim as an opportunist and a liar. On Wednesday, a top law enforcement official became the first to say publicly he believed Davis was a victim and Fine had abused him. At his news conference to explain that the statute of limitations would keep him from conducting an investigation, Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick addressed Davis directly. Bobby, Im sorry it took so lo...

Under pressure from victims rights advocates to fight child sex abuse in its ranks, the Southern Baptist Convention in 2008 determined it should not create its own database to help churches identify predators or establish an office to field abuse claims.
More churches and religious groups are conducting background checks and taking other steps to protect children against mistreatment in the wake of the sex abuse scandal that has plagued the Catholic Church for years.

Editor, the Tribune: I have worked with SNAP for almost nine years. After hearing hundreds of horrific stories of kids who were sexually abused, I learned something new a couple of weeks ago from a newly forthcoming victim. She said the reason she finally decided to speak up and seek help was because of all the news about the Penn State sex abuse. She told me the news and the graphic grand jury report helped to remove the "taboo" of speaking about having been sexually abused as a child.
This subject does need to be talked about much more, and victims should be treated with respect and are to be applauded. Yes, child sex abuse has been going on forever; but it is now being exposed, and silence is not an option. Witnesses, whistle-blowers, those who suspect abuse and those who have been a...
