  • Kudos for Lois Collins' column! The victims of teasing and bullying are crying for help. We, as adults, profess to care about educating our children, but how can a child learn if he or she is continually teased, excluded and persecuted? Our schools are not tackling bullying head-on. The majority have Band-Aid programs. Teaching compassion, empathy and respect must be implemented within the culture of the school by integrating anti-bullying and anti- bias programs that include surveys, multiple reporting systems, consistent educational reinforcement and adequate supervision on playgrounds and buses. I urge any person interested to go to www.bullypolice.org and read about the children who committed "bullycide. Carla Kelley

  • This Note argues that schools are the best line of defense against the growing problem of cyberbullying and offers a guide for schools wary of First Amendment lawsuits by students punished for their cyberspeech. In many cases, a student engaging in cyberbullying of a classmate will create a substantial disruption at school or interfere with the right of the victim to an environment conducive to learning, thus justifying action by the school under the Tinker standard. Other Supreme Court cases regarding indecent or offensive speech and speech the Court viewed as promoting drug use may provide helpful arguments for schools accused of overstepping constitutional boundaries. This Note also suggests that schools may wish to argue that courts should show more deference to disciplinary decisio...

  • The speaker at the West Virginia chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union's annual dinner in Charleston, believes state and federal lawmakers need to protect students from bullying based on the students' sexual orientation. No federal law protects students on the basis of their sexual orientation," said James Gilliam, ACLU deputy director in southern California, in a telephone interview with the Gazette-Mail. "The Student Non-Discrimination Act, now before Congress, would mandate sexual-orientation-based protection in every public school in the country.

  • DEAR ABBY: The letter from "Hurt in Ohio" (Dec. 8), the 13-year- old girl who is being bullied, was deeply affecting. I have been a middle-school teacher for 10 years. I have seen what bullying can do to kids. I'm proud that "Hurt" told her parents, but because that hasn't helped her, please tell her to find an adult at school whom she trusts and tell that adult what is happening.
