WHEN I FIRST joined Virginians for High Speed Rail, a board member from Northern Virginia told me about a business deal that went wrong. He had landed a potential contract with an Asian microchip manufacturer to bring a new plant to his region that would have created hundreds of six-figure jobs and millions in economic development.
But right as the CEO was about to sign the contract, he made a simple request - to see what traffic conditions were like from a helicopter during morning rush hour.

Sixty years ago today, at 6:30 a.m. on June 25, 1950, Air Force Staff Sgt. radio operator Gordon Hall, stationed at Itazuke, Japan, air base, heard an urgent message over the radio: "This is Kimpo radio, we are being bombed and strafed by unidentified enemy aircraft!
Those words, from an air base just northwest of Seoul, signaled the start of the Korean War, and a dangerous new phase of the Cold War.

During last year's Iraq campaign, Army Maj. Hilton Nunez felt more like an air traffic controller than the commander of 6 Hunter unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). He juggled requests from Army generals for use of the pilotless aircraft. A division commander wanted a UAV to check for surface-to-air threats. A corps commander sought one to fly far ahead of advancing troops to gather intelligence for the next day's war planning. There were never enough UAVs to go around. The Army's increasing use of UAVs reflects a wartime coming of age for unmanned vehicles once viewed as novelties. In Iraq and elsewhere, the US military is short on people and cash, but desperately needs faster and better intelligence. The services are turning to drones for their dirty, dull and dangerous missions. New comm...

Armour, the first Black woman combat pilot in U.S. military history and the first Black female pilot in the Marine Corps, is one of more than 160,000 women who have been deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan and Kuwait since 2001. The Center for Military Readiness (CMR), a private watchdog group on how military personnel are used, maintains that Army officials routinely place women in forward support companies that accompany all-male infantry/armor maneuver battalions. In July 2001, Armour led the 12 graduates in her Naval Air Station flight training class at Whiting Field in Pensacola, Ra. - topping the scores of the last 200 pilots trained at the facility.

ven as the length of combat tours shrinks and the American role in Afghanistan and Iraq winds down, a massive push is under way at Fort Carson to get soldiers ready for war.
More than 5,000 soldiers spent nearly two weeks this month firing machine guns, howitzers and helicopter-mounted cannons on training ranges, preparing for whatever they may face in Afghanistan next year. The huge exercise involves soldiers from several Fort Carson units and troops from a helicopter unit based in Hawaii.
