Archaeologists begin as readers. The young Heinrich Schliemann, captivated by the ancient Greek epics (so the
story goes), grew up and went to Hisarlik, in Asia Minor, in 1870 to find his Troy - a walled city by the sea, straight out of the Iliad. The hoard of gold jewelry he found there was Helen's own. At Mycenae, Schliemann unearthed a gold mask hiding a mummified face - Agamemnon's face - that turned to dust after the archaeologist kissed it.

There are, of course, collections of poetry and criticism, as well as a remarkable life of Thomas More.

An ambitious title, "Greece: Secrets of the Past," implies that it will deliver more than any 45-minute film covering thousands of years of history could possibly offer.
This new large-format movie at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry -- opening today and continuing through Sept. 4 -- inspires curiosity about the influential nation of islands as a substitute for thoroughness. It instead provides intriguing hints about the many wonders of the ancient civilization, which, by the way, are available through other sources.

From studies of contemporary society, Strauss believes it plausible that a coalition of Greek city-states attacked Troy in response to the insult of wife stealing-particularly considering that Paris and Helen stole the national treasure when they fled Sparta. According to Homer, individual Greeks had slipped in and out of the city earlier in the siege; infiltrating a small party under the cover of a victory celebration accompanied by civic debate over the fate of a horse statue would have been relatively easy.

Lolita Nikolova is Utah's connection to an exciting archaeological discovery in Europe -- an ancient golden hoard excavated in the cemetery of the Bulgarian town Dubene.
The adjunct instructor at Salt Lake Community College has excavated in Dubene between 1992 and 2000 but did not head the present dig in the town's cemetery. She hopes to lead a field school to Dubene next summer, where students and volunteers from Utah might help unearth more clues to life in the Balkans 4,300 years ago.
