The pope said: "Just as we take note of the 'covenant never revoked by God' so we should consider the intrinsic value of the Old Testament, even if this only acquires its full meaning in the light of the New Testament and contains promises that are fulfilled in Jesus." [...] Donahue quotes appreciatively his fellow exegete, Luke Timothy Johnson, to the effect that Christians need to learn from Jews so that we might appreciate better our own heritage. Commissioned by the Union of American Hebrew Congregations and the University of Cincinnati's College Music Conservatory in the wake of Martin Luther King's assassination, Gates uses biblical texts, excerpts from King's speeches, Negro spirituals, and sayings from Hillel - selected and edited by Brubeck's wife lola and set to Jazz, Middle...

TWENTY YEARS AGO, AS READERS OF THE "1988" column in these pages have been recently reminded, Yitzhak Rabin, then Israel's Defense Minister, was faced with the task of quelling Arab rioting against Israel in what was then known as the Administered Territories.
Frustrated at his inability to achieve success, Rabin initiated an "iron fist" policy of "force, including beatings" against rioters and stone-throwers, in an attempt to stop the violence.
Led by Rabbi Alexander Schindler, president of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations (Reform), Israel was told that its policy was "an offense to the Jewish spirit ... violates every principle of human decency ... and betrays the Zionist dream." Others, from Israel's Peace Now to the U.S. State Department, joined in chastising Israel.

Lustig, senior rabbi at the Washington Hebrew Congregation, one of the largest Jewish congregations in North America with more than 3,000 families served: Shortly after 9/11, I invited Bishop John Chane (Episcopal bishop of Greater Washington and the National Cathedral) and professor Akbar Ahmed (Ibn Khaldun scholar of Islamic studies at American University) to share with them the idea of starting an Abrahamic faith dialogue. According to Rabbi Marc Schneier, founder and president of the Foundation for Ethnic Understanding, who helped establish the weekend, the goal is to "create a paradigm of Jewish-Muslim support that we can export to other parts of the world...We must take advantage of these opportunities, especially within the Muslim world, where we are now b...
