Many folks identify the Trans-Siberian Orchestra as that heavy metal Christmas band. And much of the symphonic hard-rock outfit's reputation was born out of its distinctive take on holiday music, but that isn't the entire story. IN THE BEGINNING
The Trans Siberian Orchestra rocked the Charleston Civic Center Friday night with its non-traditional Christmas celebration concert. The show successfully blends classic Christmas tunes with heavy metal and rock. One might be skeptical that the classical music form could be translated through an electric guitar, but it can.
Defensively independent, they've never signed a record contract, and they both sport a healthy, sincere distrust of the record industry at large. "We've all read that thing [Chicago producer] Steve Albini wrote about labels. I can't remember what it's called, but I think we've all read it," says [Hall], referring to "The Problem with Music," the 1993 essay in The Baffer in which Albini wrote of major labels, "I imagine a trench, about four feet wide and five feet deep, maybe 60 yards long, filled with runny, decaying shit You can't reasonably expect to be ultrafamous without being gone all the time and just making it your job all the time," says Hall, now back at home in Marion. He lives in a comfortable ranch with a two-car garage just at the edge of the Pisgah National Forest Childr...

Orchestra puts rock spin on holiday carols It's a little hard to define the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Is it a band? A concept? A Broadway road show? What it surely is is a success. In 1986, Paul O'Neill, a former rock promoter, producer and Broadway road show musician, wrote a holiday rock opera called "Christmas Eve and Other Stories." "Christmas Eve" blended elements of traditional carols with heavy metal/prog-rock guitar and orchestrations and a background story. Over the years, the Trans- Siberian Orchestra has expanded to record two more Christmas albums, a boxed set, a novel and a theatrical TV special starring Ossie Davis, Michael Crawford and Jewel. This year, two full versions of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra are touring the country; on Thursday, the eastern version of the TSO w...
Tonight those indefatigable wild women of the blues Saffire - the Uppity Blues Women return to Rams Head Onstage (7 p.m.).
