At the core, a heat pump is simply a reversible air conditioner. Therefore, if you understand how an air conditioner works, you are well on your way to understanding a heat pump. So, think about your air conditioner. It has a set of coils inside that get cold, and a set of coils outside that get hot. A fan inside spreads the cold around your house, and a fan outside blows hot air away. Your air conditioner is "pumping" heat from inside the house to the outside.

Geothermal heating (heat pump) is extremely energy efficient and generally yields the lowest utility bills of any residential system. In effect, they use renewable solar energy from the sun's rays which get stored in the ground. Geothermal heat pumps also provide the most energy efficient cooling during summer.
