A Buchanan County jury returned a verdict in favor of a surgeon accused of medical malpractice stemming from the death of a patient after abdominal surgery.
William Goacher, 66, was admitted to Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph on Jan. 13, 2006. His family practice physician had diagnosed diverticulitis of the sigmoid colon.

ST. LOUIS - A southern Illinois woman died after being severely burned in a flash fire while undergoing surgery, a rare but vexing dilemma in operating rooms.
Janice McCall, 65, of Energy, Ill., died Sept. 8 at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn., six days after being burned on the operating table at Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion, Ill., her family's attorney said.

The Rev. Msgr. Lawrence A. Speichinger, 80, a resident of Chillicothe, passed away Thursday, Oct. 16, 2008, at Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, at St. Columban's Catholic Church in Chillicothe. A parish rosary will be held at 6 p.m. Monday at St. Columban's Catholic Church, with a family visitation to follow. Friends may call from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. Monday at Lindley Funeral Home in Chillicothe and from 4 to 9 p.m. at St. Columban's Catholic Church. Burial will be at St. Raphael Cemetery in Indian Grove.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - Nine middle school girls were sickened after apparently eating methadone pills supplied by a 16-year-old boy, police said.
The girls were hospitalized Wednesday and being kept for observation at Heartland Regional Medical Center. "It appears that the students are doing OK," St. Joseph police Capt. Kevin Castle said.
