MOSCOW - Russia has for the first time placed regulations on the largely unrestricted practice of abortion, requiring clinics to warn potential clients of the purported health hazards of the procedure. A new law signed Thursday by President Dmitry Medvedev is seen by some observers as possibly the first in a series of new rules governing abortion.
The Senate passed bills on March 3 that would ban the use of taxpayer money for abortion insurance, require the disclosure of the health risks associated with donating a human egg, and penalize the destruction of human embryos in non-therapeutic research. The bills - S1305, S1306 and S1307 - had barely enough support to pass. Sen. Linda Gray, a Glendale Republican, sponsored all three.

NEW YORK, July 17 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Today, a report released by Representative Henry Waxman (D-CA), Federal Funded Pregnancy Resource Centers Mislead Teens About Abortion Risks, found that 87 percent of federally funded "pregnancy resource centers," commonly known as crisis pregnancy centers, provided false and misleading information about the physical and mental health effects of abortion and grossly exaggerated the medical risks of abortion. The report also found that virtually all of the funding is funneled through the federal abstinence-only-until- marriage program. Between 2001 and 2005, more than $30 million in federal dollars went to more than 50 crisis pregnancy centers. On Wednesday, July 19, SIECUS is releasing its most up-to-date resource on funding for crisis pregnancy cen...

Teen pregnancies and unplanned pregnancy among single young adults are epidemic in San Antonio and in Texas," said Dr. Janet Realini, president of Healthy Futures of Texas. "These two are very sensitive issues, but we must address them if we are to reduce poverty, child abuse, school dropout and abortion in our community. "Unplanned pregnancy is measured by women themselves -it is an unplanned pregnancy because the woman says it was unplanned," stated [Bill Albert]. "Half of all pregnancies in the United States are unplanned, and most of those are single women in their twenties." Statistics from the state health department demonstrate that 62 percent of pregnancies among 1829 year olds in Bexar County are unplanned. "Sadly, when a pregnancy is unplanned, the risks are much higher -for...
In May 2006, the Constitutional Court threw out a blanket abortion ban, but limited abortions to cases of rape, health risks and fetal malformation. According to a 2007 study by the Alan Guttmacher Institute and the WHO, 27 of every 1,000 women between 15 and 45 years old who have had abortions were exposed to unskilled care or an unsafe medical environment.
A new study from New Zealand, published in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, raises important questions about the effect of abortion on women's mental health. Researchers found those reporting an abortion prior to age 21 had rates of mental disorders from age 21 to 25 more than 11/2 times higher than the rates for women who did not become pregnant and those who became pregnant but did not abort. The relationship between problems persisted even when the researchers took into account the mental health of the women prior to the abortion. The researchers concluded, "Abortion in young women may be associated with increased risks of mental health problems. Although virtually ignored in the United States, the study has provoked political debate over ab...
