The only nonprofit center in Southern Colorado to focus on education and research in the health sciences opened this week in Colorado Springs. The Julie Penrose Health Education and Research Center, located at 6071 East Woodmen Road at the St. Francis Medical Center campus, is a community-based, state-of-the-art medical center that will focus on health sciences education and research.
Both local hospitals, Memorial Health System and Penrose-St. Francis Health Centers, are participating in the new venture, which is located on the second floor of the Northcare building.

CENTERVILLE -- The state Controlling Board on Monday, March 22, released $473,000 in funding to further transform a house on the Bethany Village campus into a high-tech hub for health-care research and education for both professional and novice caregivers.
From a former bedroom of the house at 6457 Far Hills Ave., the Wright State University nursing faculty already can use computers to make human-like simulators cough or cry out in pain, manipulate their pulse, make their heart murmur, or respond to students' questions about how they're feeling.

Melanie Spector, health education, research and program development specialist with the Oklahoma Department of Corrections, said an estimated 63 percent of incarcerated females in the state need substance abuse treatment when they enter the Oklahoma corrections system.
The Incarcerated Women's Project Fund will use a $244,000 grant from the George Kaiser Family Foundation for licensed therapists to provide gender-specific substance abuse treatment programming at Oklahoma Department of Corrections facilities.
