Tattooing and body piercing, as a prevalent source of blood contact, are common sources for the spread of HIV and hepatitis C. Since these are widely practiced by prison inmates, tattooing and body piercing among prisoners represent both a public health threat and a public health challenge. This should propel correctional facilities and public health policymakers to adopt policy alternatives, including harm reduction programs and health education models. Meanwhile, more studies must focus on documenting the status of tattooing and body piercing behavior in correctional facilities.
