He firmly believes that the system in Canada is clearly in need of change and should not be a model for anyone.

With its profusion of languages, ethnic groups and regional diversities, with its unique caste system, with its contrast between information technology and industry billionaires and the nearly 300 million people who live below the poverty line, with its mixture of Mahatma Gandhi's nonviolent philosophy and outbreaks of savage communal violence, and with its success as a parliamentary democracy despite having 400 million people who cannot read or write, India remains a bewilderingly complex country. A powerful moral leader as well as a wily politician, Gandhi wanted Indians to be proud of their past, to wear Indian rather than foreign dress, to challenge their colonial overlords through peaceful protest and noncooperation and not through violence, and to eliminate discrimination against...

I didn't want to lose my insurance," says Malke, who gave birth four days before the film's June 29 premiere and quit her job soon afterward. "I knew if that happened, I couldn't apply for individual insurance, because if you're pregnant, you're declined. "I started realizing the profit end of it," she says. "Humana's motto is, 'Guidance when you need it most.' But when you need it most, you're not eligible." Humana spokesman Mark Mathis confirms that efforts are made to verify health information, although he declines to comment on specific methods, "lest someone try to take unfair advantage of that knowledge." The AIDS Network serves 11 counties, from Oakville to Niagara and offers services to PLWHAs and their families like counselling, advocacy, referrals, alternative therapies, vitamin banks and emergency funds to cover drug costs. Two of its programmes are the only ones of their kind in Canada. The Peer Mentor Advocate Program is a 16-week training course that gives participants an understanding of the health care system, the political ramifications of HIV/AIDS and AIDS drugs. Its smoking cessation program is the only one offered to PLWHAs in the country. In September, the AIDS Network will partner with Canada World Youth (CWY) to train 20 youth from India and around Canada for two months in Hamilton. The youth will then travel to India, where they will implement what they have learned and...
