The healthcare score card databases do gallant work in organizing impossibly complex subjects. They gather and analyze enormous masses of data and create quantitative rankings and metrics based on dozens or hundreds of individual indicators. The healthcare score card also rank the individual states. As with the national score cards, the underlying theme is variation: The states perform well in some respects but poorly in others. There are also pronounced geographic patterns, with some states and regions performing uniformly well and others consistently scoring at the bottom.
