  • You can set the tone with Peach Bellinis. The trendy, simple libation of white peach purée and champagne was invented in 1948 at Harry's Bar in Venice. Divide equally into 4 champagne flutes. Slowly pour sparkling wine or champagne over the peach purée so that the peach purée remains in a layer at the bottom of each flute. In a large, non-stick skillet, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the sliced chard and chopped onion. Reduce heat to medium low. Cook, stirring often until onion is soft and golden, about 15 minutes.

  • Susan Hall's background in the wine business is extensive. She has run the gamut from wine brokerage, distributor and importer to sales and marketing. "And now, I'm just closing the loop with my own retail shop. When it comes to wine specials, she said, they offer a Vault pick- of-the-week and a 10 percent case discount when you buy 12 bottles, mix and match. More special pricing is often offered on featured wines during their periodic wine tastings, since she buys in case quantities from her distributors.

  • The Veneto region of Italy sparkles in the summer sun. Prosecco, the bubbly named after the region's indigenous grape from which it's made, is one of the greatest libations of warm months. It's a laid- back, front porch sparkler that offers a crisp, fresh mouthful of effervescence and vibrant fruit at a friendly price. Unlike other sparkling wines that strive to mimic the creamy, age- worthy and often pricey bubblies of Champagne, France, Prosecco doesn't try to be anything other than its easygoing self. Prosecco is made using the Charmat method of secondary fermentation, where the carbonation takes place in large, pressurized tanks before bottling. This allows for the wine to be sold younger and fresher than Champagne, which builds carbonation via the methode Champenoise. In this metho...

  • Lucille ([Ruth Rosen]) is a sharp tongued bleached blond with a thrift shop mink coat who reminds her dead Harry that he's no great loss. "When he gave me flowers," she says, I knew he had another woman. The bigger the bouquet, the younger the woman." Lucille's one liners drive the show and Rosen clips them off like a Borscht Belt comic. Doris ([Dory Ehrlich]), although she has a dry wit that keeps Lucille in line, is the saddest of the three, and her grief at her husband's death just won't go away. Her character will provide the biggest dramatic jolt before the show ends. Meanwhile, the second act has the three friends dressing up in matching ruffles for the umpteenth wedding of another friend. Thelma. "Her weddings are like a reunion!" says one, and it is here we meet the fourt...

  • Some of them were old friends, including two by Nobel Prize-winner Toni Morrison ("The Bluest Eye" and "Beloved") and "The Chocolate War" by Robert Cormier. The top contender was new to me but it sounds like fun: "And Tango Makes Three" by Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell is a children's book "about two male penguins parenting an egg from a mixed-sex penguin couple," according to an ALA press release. I checked the Monroe County Library Web site and four of our five branches have it, all copies checked in, waiting to be read. Whenever I hear of an attempt to ban a book I wonder if the would-be banners have ever met a kid, or have entirely forgotten what it was like to be a kid. Don't they know that forbidding something increases its allure exponentially? And why do they think that re...
