BAGHDAD - A military leader of the 1920 Revolution Brigades, a major Sunni Arab insurgent group, was killed Tuesday west of Baghdad, the group announced in an Internet statement. A local official confirmed the death of Harith Dhaher al-Dhari, saying he died when rocket-propelled grenades hit his car and an accompanying vehicle in the Abu Ghraib district. Two associates also died, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of security concerns.

Al-Dhari, head of the influential Association of Muslim Scholars, is an outspoken critic of the foreign military presence in Iraq and of the Shiite-dominated government led by Prime Minister Nouri Kamal al-Maliki. He is a champion for many hard-line and disaffected Sunni Arabs, and word of the arrest warrant raised concerns that it could widen the sectarian divide in Iraq and further inflame the insurgency.

AMARAH, Iraq (AP) - Iraqis looted a military base vacated by British troops and stripped it of virtually everything removable on Friday, an indication of possible future trouble for U.S.-led coalition forces hoping to hand over security gradually to the Iraqi government. A key Iraqi lawmaker said yesterday the Bush administration will not meet its July deadline to hammer out a new bilateral security agreement governing U.S. forces in the country because of intense opposition in Iraq to the proposed pact.
