In a letter addressed to EJC President Dr. Moshe Kantor, in honor of International Holocaust Remembrance Day on Jan. 27, European Parliament President Hans-Gert Pöttering stated: Meanwhile Moshe Kantor, the recently re-elected president of the European Jewish Congress, announced that he will resign as president of the Russian Jewish Congress because, he says, the problems of European Jewry are more urgent than those of Russian Jewry. Kantor cited growing concerns among European Jews that anti-Semitism is on the rise in the wake of Israel's military operation in the Gaza Strip.

According to a widely held view, the election of Barack Obama is good news for Russia. The new U.S. president - runs the argument - will abandon the confrontational style of President George W.
