  • KALAYA, Pakistan - A seven-month Pakistani offensive has broken the back of the Taliban in the Orakzai tribal region, commanders say. But they caution that success there does not mean Pakistani troops can now move into lawless North Waziristan - an offensive Washington says is crucial for the war in Afghanistan. Many critics suspect the country is dragging its feet for strategic reasons, but Pakistani officials say it's a question of resources. A new front would strain the army, undermining its efforts to keep Orakzai and other regions that have seen offensives in recent years from falling back into Taliban hands, the officials say.

  • ,000 civilians flee Pakistani offensive against Taliban ISLAMABAD -- More than 200,000 people have fled Pakistan's latest offensive against Taliban militants in the northwest, the U.N. said Monday, as fresh clashes in the remote region killed 41 insurgents and six soldiers. Elsewhere in the northwest, a suspected U.S. missile killed five alleged militants in a house in North Waziristan, the latest in a series of strikes in the region, Pakistani officials said. North Waziristan is home to al-Qaida and Taliban commanders, many of whom play a role in the insurgency in neighboring Afghanistan. The military has pounded the Orakzai tribal region with airstrikes and artillery in an attempt to rout insurgents from the rugged, mountainous area near the Afghan border. Many Taliban fighters fle...

The militants tried unsuccessfully to blow up the gate with a rocket so they could drive the car inside the compound, he said. Three of the militants got out of the car and the fourth blew up the vehicle, killing himself. Afghan security forces killed the three remaining militants, and two Afghan guards were wounded. • ISLAMABAD - Since the Pakistani army launched a long-awaited offensive last month to destroy the Taliban in South Waziristan, many militants have fled to nearby districts and begun to establish new strongholds, a strategy that suggests they will regroup and remain a potent threat to the country's weak, U.S.-backed government. Pakistani Taliban militants have escaped primarily to Kurram and Orakzai, districts outside the battle zone but still within Pakistan's largely ungoverned tribal areas along the Afghan border, villagers there say. The military lacks a significant presence in much of these areas, making them an ideal environment for the Islamic militants to regroup.

  • PESHAWAR, Pakistan -- Missiles fired from a suspected U.S. drone struck a militant training camp in northwest Pakistan on Wednesday, killing at least 10 people in an attack apparently aimed at one of the area's most important Taliban leaders, Hakimullah Mehsud, according to news reports, militants and an intelligence official. Mehsud escaped unhurt, the intelligence official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity. The attack was the first of its kind in the Orakzai region, which lies southwest of Peshawar and close to the border with Afghanistan, residents said.

  • militants die in Pakistan clashes PARACHINAR, Pakistan -- Pakistani troops fought gunbattles and bombed militant hide-outs in a Taliban stronghold near the Afghan border Saturday, leaving six soldiers and 30 militants dead, officials said. It was part of a recently launched operation in Orakzai tribal region aimed at flushing out foreign and Pakistani militants who last year fled an army onslaught further south. Government official Sami Ullah said both ground forces and army helicopters took part in Saturday's fighting that killed 30 insurgents. The troops captured six militants after the fighting, he added. • As Pakistan delays a long-awaited offensive in North Waziristan, the remote area dubbed the last bastion of indigenous Taliban and al Qaeda, Taliban insurgents are quietly staging a comeback in several districts and territories where the military earlier declared victories. Simultaneously, Islamist fighters are spreading into parts of the Pakistani tribal belt that previously had no Taliban presence as they also extend their reach and bolster roots in main areas of Pakistan.
