One of our greatest Founding Fathers, Alexander Hamilton, was born this week (Jan. 11) in either 1755 or 1757; Hamilton gave 1757 as his birth year but probate records support 1755.
In either case, Hamilton was born poor and illegitimate on Nevis Island in the British West Indies to a shiftless father, who soon abandoned him, and a poor mother who died when he was (probably) 13.

Developer Mary Laufman stands on the one lot that has sold so far in the 41-lot Hidden Ridge subdivision, which offers sweeping views of the Columbia Gorge from large, secluded lots at the north end of Stevenson. At top, only four houses of 27 have sold in North Bonnevilles Hamilton Island subdivision, and at least 10 have entered the foreclosure process.
Work is under way on the first phase of Chinidere Mountain Estates at the east end of Stevenson.

SYDNEY (AP) -- A bungee jumping, ostrich-riding British charity worker was named the winner today of what's been dubbed the "Best Job in the World" -- a six-month contract to serve as caretaker of a tropical Australian island.
Ben Southall, 34, of Petersfield, beat out nearly 35,000 applicants from around the world for the dream assignment to swim, explore and relax on Hamilton Island in the Great Barrier Reef while writing a blog to promote the area.

Basically, the person they hire will get paid a salary of about $103,000 ($150,000 Australian) to spend six months living in a multimillion-dollar beachfront villa while enjoying the plentiful perks this paradise has to offer.
