  • CHINGAI, Pakistan -- Pakistani troops backed by missile-firing helicopters on Monday struck a religious school purportedly being used as an al-Qaida training center, killing 80 people in what appeared to be the country's deadliest-ever attack against suspected militants. The country's top Islamic political leader said American planes were used in the pre-dawn strike against the school -- known as a madrassa -- and called for nationwide protests Tuesday, claiming all those killed were innocent students and teachers. Both Pakistani and the U.S. military officials denied any American involvement in the attack in northwestern Pakistan, less than two miles from the Afghan border.

  • Despite continuing suicide attacks in Pakistani cities, Pakistani forces poised to attack the Taliban and al Qaeda in a key tribal redoubt along the Afghanistan border have a better chance of success than in the past because of months of successful CIA drone attacks and growing opposition to the militants among tribal groups. Islamic extremists on Monday again showed their ability to infiltrate Pakistan's capital, Islamabad, where a suicide bomber attacked the headquarters of the U.N. World Food Program, killing five local employees. Such tactics, however, have increasingly alienated Pakistanis including in the tribal area along Pakistan's border with Afghanistan.

  • PESHAWAR, Pakistan - Pakistan's new government and Taliban militants said Friday that they would press ahead with peace talks despite American skepticism and a militant bombing that killed three people at a police station. A spokesman for an umbrella group of Pakistani militants defended the car bombing by saying the militants maintained their right to carry out revenge killings, a glaring exception to a cease-fire declared by the group in response to the peace talks.

  • UNITED NATIONS - The U.N. committee that oversees the Taliban blacklist dropped 14 names Friday at the Afghan government's urging, including several members of the peace council that President Hamid Karzai formed to find a political solution to the country's insurgency. The Afghan government had asked the sanctions committee to drop up to 50 former Taliban leaders from its list, and provided extensive documentation aimed at showing they have since been reintegrated into society. Removing sanctions against former Afghan Taliban, including a travel ban and assets freeze, is seen as key to promoting dialogue.
