ATHENS, Greece - Here's one gold medal that's not in doubt: Winner of the biggest heels at the Athens Olympics goes to Bruno Grandi and his Federation Internationale De Gymnastique (FIG). From the start, they poorly handled the affair of American gymnast Paul Hamm and his disputed gold medal, but on Thursday night their gutless ineptitude reached new heights.

ATHENS, Greece - U.S. Olympic Committee officials angrily denounced gymnastics' international federation for sending a letter to Olympic gold medalist Paul Hamm asking him to give up his gold medal to rectify a judging error. The USOC said the letter was an attempt to pressure Hamm into giving up his medal in the wake of the scoring error during the men's allaround gymnastics competition Aug. 18.

Olympic champion Nastia Liukin was elected to the International Gymnastics Federation's Athletes Commission. Meanwhile, Fabian Hambuechen, the silver medalist at the 2007 worlds, left the gym on crutches after injuring his ankle during training in London. - SAMMY WANJIRU of Kenya won the Chicago Marathon with the fastest time on American soil, 2 hours, 5 minutes, 41 seconds. Russia's Liliya Shobukhova was a winner in her second marathon, with American Deena Kastor sixth.

• Way Cleared for Morgan Hamm to Go to Games

Paul Hamm will not be competing in Beijing, but twin brother Morgan will be in the Olympics. USA Gymnastics announced Tuesday that the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) would not appeal the recent ruling by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency regarding Morgan Hamm.

So at least two of China's female gymnasts are believed to be just out of diapers and too young to compete in the Beijing Games. Chinese officials, of course, have produced the necessary paperwork that shows the two tots are 16 years old, the minimum age to compete in the Olympics, as mandated by the International Gymnastics Federation in 1997.

ATHENS, Greece (AP) - Paul Hamm thought his fantastic finish was too good to be true. Maybe he was right. The International Gymnastics Federation ruled Saturday that Yang Tae-young was unfairly docked a tenth of a point in the all-around final, costing him the gold medal that ended up going to Hamm. The South Korean got the bronze instead.

• It Will Cost Countries That Want to Use Replay System

AARHUS, Denmark - Sparked by a judging debacle at the Athens Olympics and helped by some of the best technology in sports, the International Gymnastics Federation is using a new pay-as-you-go replay system at world championships that can break down every routine, frame by frame. Competition starts Saturday with men's team qualifying. When the first disagreement arises, teams will start paying. It will cost $300 to file the first protest, $500 for the second and $1,000 for the third. If a team wins the challenge, it gets the money back. If not, it goes to the charitable foundation of the federation (FIG).
