  • AUGUSTA - Enemy gunfire has taken the life of U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Eric Shaw - a 31-year-old soldier, husband and father of three - who grew up in Exeter, Gov. John Baldacci announced Tuesday. Shaw was on his third combat tour and was serving in Afghanistan with the 327th Infantry, First Brigade Combat Team from Fort Campbell, Ky., when he was killed Sunday, a statement from the governor's office said.

  • Mississippians shouldn't wait for slick TV ads or glossy brochures from some of the 11 men running for governor this year. A forum at Mississippi State University this past week gave three of the low-budget candidates a chance to connect directly with a few hundred potential voters. Democrat Guy Dale Shaw of Coffeeville, a 74-year-old retired tax assessor, was a hit with students and drew frequent applause and laughter with his decidedly unpolished statements.

  • Nesbit homebuilder Chris Massey upset Doug Davis to win election to the 1st District state Senate seat Davis had held since 2005, and Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant avoided a runoff with Pass Christian contractor Dave Dennis in Tuesday's Republican gubernatorial primary. The two top vote-getters in the Democratic gubernatorial primary, Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny DuPree and Clarksdale lawyer Bill Luckett, appeared headed toward a runoff after William Bond Compton of Meridian and veteran tax assessor Guy Dale Shaw of Coffeeville combined for about 15 percent of the vote.

  • LITTLE FALLS -- Gary Shaw's secret is out. The mean-looking Jersey guy you see seated ringside at many major fights broadcast by HBO and Showtime is really just a softie.

He was a member of the "Goodtimers", and at his passing, of the "Franklin County Ramblers". Joe loved to pick his five-string, and spending time with all of the "Ramblers He was preceded in death by his first wife, Norma Jean Roark Angell; mother, Dorothy Fisher Angell; father, James Lewis Angell; sisters, Marie Angell Brown and Gloria Carolyn ...

  • Actually, I called this one. Ask my son. Whore, she said, she being me. It was the only defense. Rich guy has sex with hotel maid. What can you say? True love. Not likely. Quote Bernard Shaw. What was her price? OK, so half the people think he's been put through the wringer, and half think she has - at least when they aren't thinking about how a woman who very clearly killed her child, but probably didn't mean to (a.k.a. prosecutorial overreaching), gets away with murder. What a wonderful world. Injustice is gender neutral.

  • The Chicago Bears' search for linebacker help led them to a guy named Tim Shaw on Monday. Seems Shaw was a fifth-round pick out of Penn State in 2007 and was cut in the preseason by Jacksonville, his second NFL team. Word is the Bears also contacted 36-year-old Derrick Brooks, former star in Tampa Bay, but decided to pass.

  • Fodder about a [Alcee Hastings] appointment has been popping up on blogs and have even been the subject of political talk shows. Democrats are dismissing it all as a campaign tactic designed to scare voters into voting for republicans. It may be working around the country, but Hasting thas supporters from both parties in South Florida. "Alcee is a good, patriotic American, and he's a capable guy and he's a friend of mine," said U.S. Rep. clay Shaw, R-Fl. "Alcee could certainly do the job." Shaw is in a tough reelection bid against democrat Ron Klein and Hastings is backing Shaw in that contest. But Hastings also has the confidence of former US Senator Bob Graham, who says he is fit for the post.
