  • The Ministers reaffirmed the obligations of all states, in accordance with international law; relevant agreements; UN Security Council Resolutions 1546 (2004), 1618 (2005), 1267 (1999), and 1373 (2001); and other relevant Security Council Resolutions, to combat terrorist activities and to prevent the use by terrorists of their territory for supplying, organizing, and launching terrorist operations in Iraq.

  • Conference highlighted dwindling chances for a two-state solution WASHINGTON, Jan. 16, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Middle East Policy Council gathered today a distinguished panel for their 71st Capitol Hill Conference. The conference addressed the question of whether the Obama administration can or should formulate a "grand strategy" in the Middle East, and in either case how should policy- making address the most urgent problems in the region. These include the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Iran's nuclear program, transnational terrorism, the "Arab Awakening," Syria's civil war and political and economic security in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states. The event speakers and a summary of their comments are below; for members of the press seeking a full transcript from the...

  • As the storms of economic crisis gathered throughout Europe, Asia, America, and the rest of the world in late 2007, one area alone seemed immune. By mid-July 2008, oil prices had skyrocketed to almost $150 per barrel (p/b), higher than ever before, and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) seemed set to benefit from a huge financial surplus. This rosy scenario was short-lived; soon enough, the wave of economic disaster sweeping the world reached the shores of the Persian Gulf, damaging the petroleum export revenues as well as the oil-related and tourism businesses. But beyond having to cope with the dramatic economic turndown, the crisis has exposed an Achilles' heel in the oil-based economies of the r...

  • It is sometimes forgotten that Iran, under the late Shah, was one of Israel's, closest allies, and that Israel's covert arms deliveries to Iran during the eight year Iran-Iraq war (1980-88) allowed the Islamic Republic to resist Iraq's assault. President Mahmud Ahmadinejad's anti-Israeli diatribes are not driven by antiSemitism, but by outrage - shared by much of the Muslim world - at Israel's cruel and oppressive treatment of the Palestinians under its rule. There remains the matter of Iran's relations with the Gulf States. Iran fears that it will be attacked from U.S. bases in the Gulf, while the Gulf States, in turn, fear that Iran will use the local [Shi]'a communities to undermine the current political order. These mutual fears could be allayed by a security pact between Iran and m...

  • Some elements are indicating an interest in Prime Minister al-Maliki's new reconciliation effort, while still employing violence against the Coalition forces and the ISF from a sense of honor and as a means to force meaningful political accommodation, DOD reported. On October 3, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice met in Cairo with the foreign ministers of Egypt, Jordan, and the states of the Gulf Cooperation Council, which include Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Oman.

  • In an interview, Khaled M. Al-Fayez, CEO, (GIB), talked about GIB and investment banking. GIB has been in the market for a long time and has a strong franchise. Competition will push it further to maintain its competitive advantages. The bank is active throughout the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states and has undertaken equity issues in a number of these markets. Underwriting and advising corporate customers on raising funds for new projects are core activities of GIB, one of the few institutions in the region that can provide complete investment-banking solutions. Given the transformation underway in the GCC's financial landscape, he believe equity and debt (primarily Islamically structured) are going to feature prominently in meeting future financing needs.

  • President Bush's Air Force One was still airborne on its way back from a six-country, eight-day tour of Middle Eastern capitals when agreements and understandings began to unravel. Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah was noncommittal on pumping more crude oil. With oil at $100 per barrel, all OPEC countries are already siphoning off at full capacity and the desert kingdom's now small extra capacity would be a drop in the global bucket. The six Gulf states, known as Gulf Cooperation Council, have already accumulated a cool $1 trillion nest egg - half of which is already assigned to SWF (Sovereign Wealth Funds) for investment abroad.
