Guinea pigs are social creatures that do best when made part of the family. While many people think of them as "starter" pets for their children, their complex lives mean they don't do well when banished to their cages, said Steve Sehr of Guinea Pig Rescue in Rio Rancho. They require much more work and expense than most realize, and because they are fragile, they may not be suitable pets for young children.
Here are some tips to ensure quality lives for the animals, which may live up to 9 years (the average is 5 to 7):
