RUMFORD -- Andrea Bowen plans to spend more time in Maine Mud. Not the wet soil that covers the earth in March, but the dark chocolate sauce that she creates and sells. Bowen, a Connecticut native, will retire from her job as guidance counselor at Rumford Elementary School in June after having served in the district for 21 years. She plans to devote more time to her business, but she will greatly miss the students and staff she has worked with for so many years, she said.
HOULTON - Elementary school students in SAD 29 will see a new face when they return to school this fall as the school board on Monday evening approved a guidance counselor's position for the 746 students in pre-kindergarten through sixth grade. The board also talked about initiatives being undertaken to cut back on expenses.
Richard R. Dera, of Buffalo, a retired Buffalo school guidance counselor, died Monday in McAuley Residence, Town of Tonawanda. He was 84. Born in Buffalo, he was a graduate of South Park High School and served in the Army during World War II in the occupying forces in Trieste, Italy, and again during the Korean War as an administrative specialist with the rank of sergeant in Augsburg, Germany.
Mary Katherine "Kay" Ferris Coursey, wife of Marshall Douglas Coursey for 36 years, peacefully entered into rest on Friday, June 05, 2009 at the residence. Kay attended the Academy of Richmond County and graduated from Augusta State University (Augusta College), in 1972 at the age of 19. She earned a Master of Education from The Citadel in 1979. Her life long ambition was to be a guidance counselor working with young people. She was employed by Dorchester School District II and Aiken County Public Schools, retiring as a guidance counselor from Schofield Middle School in 2007
A Winthrop High School guidance counselor alleges that administrators demoted her after she raised concerns about how grade- point averages for high school seniors were calculated in 2008. Marie Sitchenko of Winthrop is suing the School Department and the town, claiming her rights were violated under the Maine Whistleblowers' Protection Act and the Maine Human Rights Act.
A retired Palisades Park guidance counselor and a member of the Old Tappan Planning Board were among 21 people arrested in a two- month child pornography investigation that spanned five New Jersey counties, authorities said Thursday. The sweep was among the largest of its kind in North Jersey, authorities said. Investigators from Bergen, Passaic, Morris, Sussex and Union counties joined the New Jersey State Police and the state Attorney General's Office in conducting the sweep, which began in February.
WOOD-RIDGE -- A former high school guidance counselor has filed a lawsuit against the Wood-Ridge Board of Education claiming wrongful termination and "sustained embarrassment and damages" due to her dismissal last year, court documents show. Susan E. Smith, who worked at the high school from Sept, 1, 2005, to June 30, 2008, filed the two-count claim in early April in state Superior Court in Hackensack under the Conscientious Employee Protection Act, records show.
North County High School Class of 2011 marched across the stage at Towson University Tuesday morning to receive their high school diplomas. There were 382 graduates. It's been a stellar class. This is one of the most enjoyable senior classes that I've ever worked with, " said guidance counselor and department chairman Jim Vaughn. Lois Murphy, a guidance counselor at Falmouth Middle School for the past 23 years and the owner of an impressive collection of pink flamingoes, died Wednesday. She was 53. Mrs. Murphy began working in student services in 1985. She was remembered by her colleagues Thursday as a compassionate and dedicated person who worked tirelessly to keep young people from falling though the cracks.
