Workers in Italy and Japan for Colorado Springs-based Maytag Aircraft Corp. are playing a key role in U.S. military relief work for victims of the earthquake and tsunami in northern Japan and in enforcing the U.N.-ordered no-fly zone in Libya, company officials say. Maytag employees are working overtime to provide around-the- clock services at Misawa Air Base, where Maytag is responsible for air terminal and ground handling operations for all U.S. military services and the Japan Air Self-Defense Force, said David Nelson, the company's executive vice president. Employees also are working extra shifts to provide around-the-clock refueling services at Aviano Air Base in northeastern Italy to U.S. fighters enforcing the Libya no-fly zone.

LAST WEEK the federal government fined Continental Airlines, its regional affiliate and the airline handling ground operations for keeping passengers on a plane stranded on a Minnesota tarmac for nearly six hours. It is the first penalty of its kind. While we don't want to push the struggling airline industry closer to the brink, the government is right to draw a line. The $175,000 in fines for the three airlines is a small enough financial sting, considering the importance of the issue. Passengers cannot be expected to sit in grounded planes for hours on end with no food, no water and no idea when they will be allowed off.
