  • Virginia Tech and its employees, students and visitors generate $1.3 billion in economic activity and sustain an estimated 15,000 jobs in the Roanoke and New River valleys, according to a university study released Monday. Researchers estimated Tech directly or indirectly accounts for 27 percent of gross regional product - the sum of all goods and services produced in the counties of Montgomery, Floyd, Pulaski, Giles, Roanoke and Craig and the cities of Roanoke, Salem and Radford. In Montgomery County alone, Tech helps account for 25 percent of all jobs and 33 percent of all wages earned, according to the study.
