The United States did join the Monterrey Consensus, committing to increase Official Development Assistance (ODA) - which is development aid and not a "U.N.-imposed tax," channeled directly to recipient governments and voluntary organizations, with only a minuscule proportion disbursed through the United Nations.

Since Joseph Brennan of the Connecticut Business & Industry Association is so adamantly opposed to the idea of state government requiring large businesses to provide a certain level of health coverage for their employees, I wonder whether he considers it OK that Wal-Mart, and probably others, pay their employees so little that many cannot afford the health insurance offered by their employer and are eligible for taxpayer-subsidized health care. If so, would he be willing to put the considerable weight of his organization behind the concept of completely relieving Connecticut employers of the burden of providing health insurance by making all Connecticut residents eligible for taxpayer-subsidized health insurance?
