WASHINGTON, July 5, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Air Transport Association of America (ATA), the industry trade organization for the leading U.S. airlines, today in the European Court of Justice (ECJ), called for the European Union application of an Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) to be dismissed and declared illegal. The ATA, which brought the action on behalf of all of its members, said in its argument that aviation greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions should be regulated on a global sectoral basis and that unilateral action by any country or group of countries violates international law.

EPA and NHTSA, on behalf of the Department of Transportation, are issuing this joint proposal to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve fuel economy for light-duty vehicles for model years 2017-2025. This proposal extends the National Program beyond the greenhouse gas and corporate average fuel economy standards set for model years 2012-2016. On May 21, 2010, President Obama issued a Presidential Memorandum requesting that NHTSA and EPA develop through notice and comment rulemaking a coordinated National Program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions of light-duty vehicles for model years 2017- 2025. Washington -- Recent high-level talks between U.S. and Chinese officials on climate change produced no assurances by China that the country would dramatically reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, according to Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner, who took part in the discussions. The Menomonee Falls Republican said Chinese officials did not answer questions about whether they would sign on to a possible international agreement to reduce emissions or cooperate with foreign governments to address climate change in other ways.

The United States EPA is proposing new source performance standards for emissions of carbon dioxide (CO<INF>2</INF>) for new affected fossil fuel-fired electric utility generating units (EGUs). The EPA is proposing these requirements because CO<INF>2</INF> is a greenhouse gas (GHG) and fossil fuel-fired power plants are the country's largest stationary source emitters of GHGs.
