ST. JOHN'S, Newfoundland, Dec. 5 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) congratulated the Green Party of Canada for its commitment to end the federal subsidies that prop up Canada's commercial seal hunt.
Party leader Jim Harris yesterday stated in a release that, "This government-subsidized seal hunt is a chapter in our history that needs to come to a close.

I must say I am pleasantly surprised that conservative America has realized there is a large landmass directly north of the United States. Yes, Canadians have elected a Conservative government that will last two years at most ("Canada moves to right in vote," Page 1, Tuesday, and "Canada's victory," Op-Ed, yesterday).
Once again, though, you have missed the point. The Conservatives gained 36 percent of the popular vote. However, the Liberals, the New Democrats, the Green Party and even Bloc Quebecois - all with strong leftist convictions - took about 63 percent of the vote. Canada is not, as some neoconservatives seem to think, about to swing to the right. We value our social convictions far more than the American right gives us credit for.

Several hundred people are expected to raise a toast to rye and hops at the 10th annual Buffalo Brew Fest, which is scheduled from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the HSBC Arena atrium and plaza. The event, which raises money for the Buffalo Hearing & Speech Center, will feature more than 100 varieties of beer from around the world. Brewers will be set up across two floors of the arena. Food will be available from a menu specially prepared by Delaware North Cos. and featuring beer-inspired items. Tickets at the door will be $35. The admission price includes a souvenir sampling glass and 20 tickets to taste and enjoy the craft brews featured. Those who attend must be at least 21 years old.
