SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - Rich Whitney, the Green Party candidate for Illinois governor, insists he can win the election. He pretty much has to say that. Every candidate does, even ones who barely cracked 10 percent the last time out.
The more interesting question might be how much Whitney can capitalize on voter dissatisfaction to increase the Greens' influence in Illinois. Could he attract enough Democratic votes to cost Gov. Pat Quinn the election? Could future major-party candidates feel the need to court Green supporters?

Urban America got a hip new soundtrack in the 1970s, and Al Green's was a leading voice in the soul-music chorus. With a honey-sweet tenor, he bowled over listeners with hits such as "Let's Stay Together," "I'm Still in Love With You" and "Look What You've Done for Me." Working with Willie Mitchell, owner of Memphis' Hi Records, Green became legendary for his sexy, instantly recognizable singles.
AG: [Screaming] Heck, no! I never felt like I was losing control... I've always committed my work to the Lord and let him do the controlling. We step back and let Him do it, and then we know that it'll be OK. Whether we're talking about "I'm Still in Love With You," or "Love and Happiness" or "Let's Stay Together," any of these songs, it still has a flavor of r&b, gospel, pop. It still has ...

Bringing a whole new meaning to back-door politics, Gregor Knauer agreed to run for office in the back alley of his Tempe home.
On the drive home from the ultra progressive Howard Zinn Memorial Film Festival in early April, Knauer, a 56-year-old groundkeeper, was urged to run for the Arizona Legislature. His friend, the driver, told him the Green Party had just gotten the 20,000 signatures necessary to put candidates on the 2010 ballot for the upcoming midterm elections. By the time they arrived at his home and had lifted his bike out of the VW convertible, Knauer decided to run as the little guy, for the little guy, in the Arizona House of Representatives, District 17.

I was honored but overwhelmed," [Rosa Clemente] said. "When she called me, I thought she wanted me to consult on the campaign, not be her-vice president, not saying that I am not ready. I wasn't overwhelmed with the task. This is a historical moment for the hip-hop generation and it's not an ego thing, it's just the truth and that means a lot.
Clemente said [Cynthia McKinney]'s candidacy represents many people not typically approached by political pollsters including the "average brothers and sisters on the street, the real working class, the real people that work two jobs and still fall under the poverty line."
"I'm a huge fan of political diversity. Whether or not they get a lot of votes, American democracy should have a lot of depth," said [Farai Chideya], adding that it will be in...

Green Party gubernatorial candidate Howie Hawkins brought his campaign to Buffalo on Thursday, urging voters to see him as an alternative to Democratic candidate Andrew M. Cuomo.
While acknowledging Cuomo's lead in the polls -- "It looks like Cuomo's going to win," he said during a morning news conference -- Hawkins laid out his platform, including his support for increasing taxes on the rich in order to pay for state services.
